How non-surgical skin tightening works

As we age, the skin makes less collagen and its supporting fibres loosen, which shows first along the jawline, under the chin and on the neck. Skin tightening treatments deliver controlled heat into the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin, while protecting the surface. The skin responds by remodelling and producing new collagen.

Results build over the weeks after each session and are best suited to mild or early laxity. They do not remove excess skin and are not a substitute for a surgical lift.

The treatments we use

SkinTyte is a protocol on the Sciton BBL HEROic. It uses gentle pulses of infrared light to heat the dermis, with CoolComfort cooling on the surface. We usually recommend it when the first signs of loosening appear on the lower face, jawline, neck or chest.

Sylfirm X RF microneedling is an option when firmness is one of several concerns, such as texture or scarring. Aerolase NeoSkin passes laser energy over the face or neck to stimulate collagen, usually over 4 to 6 sessions. We recommend one approach, or a combination, at your consultation.

Is it right for you?

It may suit you if

  • You have early or mild loosening of the skin
  • You would prefer a non-surgical option
  • You are happy to wait for gradual change over a course

It may not be suitable if

  • You have significant excess skin that only surgery would address
  • You have a tan or recent sun exposure on the area (for BBL)
  • You are pregnant
  • You take medication that makes the skin sensitive to light

If surgery would serve you better, we will tell you honestly at your consultation.

Risks and side effects

Heat-based treatments carry some risk, even with cooling.

  • Warmth and temporary redness of the treated skin
  • Mild swelling
  • Rarely, blistering, a burn or changes in skin colour

After BBL: keep out of strong sun for two weeks or more, wear a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ every day and pause retinol and other strong actives for two days.

Individual results vary. Results depend on your skin, age, lifestyle, the number of sessions and how closely you follow aftercare advice.

Questions

Skin Tightening questions

Anything else? Ask us at your free consultation, or call 020 7531 6600.

Is this a non-surgical facelift?

No. Skin tightening can help the appearance of mild laxity over a course of treatments, but it does not lift or remove skin the way surgery does. If surgery would suit you better, we will say so.

How many sessions does skin tightening take?

Most people have a course, and SkinTyte is offered with a saving on four sessions. Results can then be maintained with periodic sessions.

When will I see results?

Firmness builds slowly over the following weeks while the skin remodels and lays down new collagen.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel warmth. Sciton’s CoolComfort system chills the surface of the skin while the deeper layer is warmed.

Which skin types can be treated?

The clinic uses SkinTyte across skin types I to VI, with settings adjusted for your skin. We assess you first.

What is the difference between SkinTyte and Sylfirm X?

SkinTyte heats the skin with infrared light from the surface. Sylfirm X delivers radiofrequency through fine needles, so it also treats texture and scarring. We will recommend the one that fits your concerns.
