What are spider and thread veins?

Spider veins (you may also hear thread veins or broken capillaries) are tiny blood vessels that have widened just beneath the skin. They appear as fine red, purple or bluish lines, sometimes branching like a web, most often around the nose, across the cheeks and on the legs.

They are usually harmless, but many people would rather they were less visible. Larger, raised varicose veins are different and are not treated with this method.

How the laser works

We use two technologies. The first is the Aerolase Neo Elite, an Nd:YAG laser working at 1064 nm. Its energy warms the blood inside the vessel until the vessel seals, and your body then breaks it down over the following weeks. Skin pigment soaks up little of this wavelength, so it is the clinic’s choice for darker skin tones.

For lighter skin, BBL HEROic (Sciton’s BroadBand Light, a light-based treatment rather than a laser) can treat small facial veins and general redness across a wider area. We choose the device and settings at your assessment.

Is it right for you?

It may suit you if

  • You have fine red, blue or purple veins close to the surface
  • You are prepared for a course of sessions
  • You can protect the treated skin from the sun afterwards

It may not be suitable if

  • You have large, raised or painful varicose veins (these need a vascular assessment)
  • You have a tan or recent sun exposure on the area
  • You are pregnant
  • You take medication that makes your skin sensitive to light

New veins can appear over time, so some people come back for occasional top-up sessions.

Risks and side effects

Laser and light treatments heat the skin, so some short-term effects are expected.

  • Redness and mild swelling, usually settling within a few hours
  • Temporary darkening or bruising over treated veins
  • Crusting or, rarely, blistering
  • Patches of lighter or darker skin, a bigger risk on tanned skin
  • Very rarely, a burn

Aftercare matters: protect the area with a high-factor sunscreen and keep it out of strong sun until any redness has gone, and for two weeks at the very least after BBL.

Individual results vary. Results depend on your skin, age, lifestyle, the number of sessions and how closely you follow aftercare advice.

How it works

Your treatment, step by step

  1. Doctor consultation

One of our doctors examines the veins, checks your skin type, goes through your health background and gives you a straight answer on whether laser will help.

  2. Your plan and price

We recommend the device, the number of sessions and the full price before you book.

  3. Treatment

You wear protective eyewear while the handpiece passes over the area. Most sessions take 15 to 30 minutes.

  4. Aftercare

Daily sunscreen, no strong sun for two weeks or more after BBL, and a two-day break from retinol and similar actives.

Questions

Laser Spider Vein Removal questions

Anything else? Ask us at your consultation, or call 020 7531 6600.

Are spider veins and thread veins the same thing?

Yes. Spider veins, thread veins, broken capillaries and telangiectasia all describe the same fine, widened blood vessels near the surface of the skin.

How many sessions do thread veins usually take?

Small facial veins can respond after one session, but most people need two or three, and widespread redness or larger areas may need more. We will give you a plan at your consultation.

Will the veins come back?

Treated vessels are cleared by the body, but new veins can form over time, for example with sun exposure or genetics. Some people have occasional top-up sessions.

Can you treat leg veins?

Small, localised spider veins on the lower legs can be treated. Larger or raised varicose veins are not suitable for this treatment and need a vascular assessment.

Do you use injections or sclerotherapy?

No. Our vein treatments use laser and broadband light only.

Is it suitable for darker skin?

We assess every skin type first. The Aerolase Neo Elite works at a wavelength that skin pigment absorbs relatively little, which is why the clinic picks it for darker skin tones.

How much does it cost?

Treatment for spider veins on the nose or cheeks starts at £195 per session. Larger areas cost more; see the price table above. Your doctor consultation costs £100, and you will know the full price before you book treatment.
