Laser hair removal works by selective photothermolysis: the pigment (melanin) in each hair takes in the light energy, which heats and weakens the follicle so that regrowth slows and becomes finer. Only hairs in their active growth phase respond, which is why a course of sessions is needed to catch each hair at the right stage.
Results vary with your skin type, hair colour and thickness, and hormones. Dark, coarse hair responds best. Very fine, light or grey hair responds less well. Top-up sessions may be needed over time.
Because laser targets melanin, darker skin needs a different approach. We use the Aerolase Neo Elite, an Nd:YAG laser working at 1064 nm in very short 650-microsecond bursts. Skin pigment soaks up relatively little light at this wavelength, which is why the clinic chooses it for skin types III to VI, including Asian and Afro-Caribbean skin.
For lighter skin types I and II, the clinic usually uses BBL HEROic Forever Bare, Sciton’s broadband light protocol. It is a light-based treatment, not a laser, and it heats the follicles gradually in a gliding motion. Your assessment decides which you have.
Every skin tone
Skin types are described on the Fitzpatrick scale, from I (very fair, always burns) to VI (deeply pigmented). We confirm yours at your consultation.
If excess hair is linked to a hormonal condition, laser may need to go alongside medical treatment. Our doctors can advise.
Laser hair removal is a medical treatment and carries some risk, which is higher in darker skin types. That is why we assess you and patch test first.
Most side effects settle within 2 to 4 days. Keep treated skin out of direct sun and use sunscreen on exposed areas for at least four weeks.
Individual results vary. Results depend on your skin, age, lifestyle, the number of sessions and how closely you follow aftercare advice.
How it works
Our laser aesthetician assesses your skin type, hair, any recent tanning and the areas you want treated, then recommends the device and settings. It includes a free AI skin analysis, and you can come in or meet us by video.
A small area is tested to check how your skin responds. Your first session is at least a week later.
Your sessions come with four to six weeks between them, depending on the body area. You will wear protective goggles, and for sensitive areas we can apply a numbing cream half an hour to an hour beforehand.
Avoid direct sun and use sunscreen on treated areas for at least four weeks. Tell us if anything worries you.

Laser gives long-term hair reduction rather than permanent removal. Hair becomes finer and sparser over a course, and top-up sessions may be needed over time. Results vary with skin type, hair colour and hormones.
Everyone is different. Darker skin types and finer hair usually need more sessions. Courses of 6, 8 or 12 sessions are available, spaced every 4 to 6 weeks.
Yes. The Aerolase Neo Elite works at 1064 nm, a wavelength that skin pigment absorbs relatively little, so the clinic uses it for skin types III to VI. Darker skin often needs more sessions at lower settings, and we always patch test first.
Most people find it tolerable, and some areas cause very little discomfort. Many patients describe BBL as feeling like a warm stone massage. For sensitive areas we can apply numbing cream half an hour to an hour before your session.
Yes. We test a small area of skin first, then wait at least a week before your first full session so we can see how your skin reacts.
Yes. Reducing hair can help with razor bumps and ingrown hairs. For more complex hair-related skin conditions, the clinic also offers doctor-led medical laser hair removal.
No. We do not offer laser hair removal to anyone who is pregnant.
