What is microneedling?

Microneedling (clinicians also call it collagen induction therapy) uses very fine needles to make controlled micro-channels in the skin. The skin responds as it would to a small injury: it starts a repair process that produces new collagen and elastin.

Traditional microneedling uses a pen or roller. At Rejuvence we use Sylfirm X, a medical device that delivers radiofrequency energy through the needles, so the heat reaches the deeper layer of the skin where collagen is made. It is minimally invasive: the skin is punctured, so it is still a medical treatment that needs an assessment first.

Why radiofrequency microneedling

On its own, needling relies on the wound-healing response. Sylfirm X adds controlled heat in the dermis, which encourages new collagen and helps tighten the skin’s supporting fibres. The needle depth can be adjusted to the area and to the concern being treated.

Sylfirm X can deliver energy as a pulsed or a continuous wave, so the same device can be set up for scarring and texture or, more gently, for pigmentation and redness. See our Sylfirm X page for those uses.

Is it right for you?

It may suit you if

  • You have acne scarring, enlarged pores or uneven texture
  • You would like gradual improvement over a course of treatments
  • You can avoid strong sun on the area while it heals

It may not be suitable if

  • You have active acne breakouts or a skin infection in the area
  • You have taken isotretinoin (Roaccutane) in the last 4 to 6 months
  • You are pregnant
  • You have a pacemaker or metal implants in the area
  • You tend to form keloid scars (please tell us, as we may suggest a different plan)

Tell us about any medical conditions and medicines at your consultation. We may ask you to check with your GP first.

Risks and side effects

Microneedling breaks the skin, so short-term effects are normal.

  • Redness and slight swelling, which typically settle within a few hours
  • Tingling or warmth during treatment
  • Small marks from the needles for a day or two
  • Rarely, infection, prolonged redness or changes in skin colour

Follow your aftercare closely: avoid direct sun, use gentle skincare and apply sunscreen daily while the skin recovers.

Individual results vary. Results depend on your skin, age, lifestyle, the number of sessions and how closely you follow aftercare advice.

Questions

Microneedling questions

Anything else? Ask us at your free consultation, or call 020 7531 6600.

Is Sylfirm X the same as microneedling?

Sylfirm X is a type of microneedling. It uses fine needles like standard microneedling and also delivers radiofrequency energy into the deeper skin, which is why we use it for our microneedling treatments.

How many sessions are usually needed?

For acne scarring a course of 3 to 4 sessions is typical. Texture and pores may need a similar course. We will give you a plan at your consultation.

Does microneedling hurt?

Most people feel a slight tingling as the needles enter the skin. A numbing cream can be applied before treatment to make it more comfortable.

How long is the recovery?

Redness and slight swelling are common straight after treatment and typically settle within a few hours. We will tell you how to look after your skin while it recovers.

Is it suitable for darker skin?

Sylfirm X is used across skin types and colours, and its gentle settings are chosen to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes. We assess your skin before recommending it.

Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?

Yes. It can be combined with exosomes, polynucleotides or laser as part of a skin plan. We will only suggest a combination that suits your skin and budget.
