What are polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are purified strands of DNA, usually sourced from fish, placed into the skin through a series of tiny injections. Rather than filling or freezing anything, they are meant to support the repair work your skin already does.

At Rejuvence we use them to improve skin quality: hydration, elasticity and the look of thin or crepey skin. They do not add volume, which is why they suit delicate areas such as under the eyes.

We offer two of the best-known polynucleotide brands. Rejuran, developed in South Korea, is used across the face and for skin texture. Plinest, made in Italy, has versions for the face and for the delicate skin around the eyes. Your practitioner recommends one based on your skin and the area being treated.

How the treatment works

Once in the skin, polynucleotides act as messengers that support tissue repair. They are thought to prompt fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen) into action and to quieten the background inflammation that comes with older skin.

Because the treatment works through your own skin’s response, change is gradual. Improvement builds across a course of sessions, and occasional top-ups can help hold on to it.

Is it right for you?

It may suit you if

  • You want to improve skin quality rather than change your features
  • You have thin or crepey skin under the eyes or on the neck
  • You are happy to have a course of treatments and wait for gradual results

It may not be suitable if

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have an active skin infection in the area
  • You are allergic to fish or to any ingredient in the product
  • You are looking for instant volume or a lift

If you have a medical condition or take regular medication, tell us at your consultation. We may ask you to speak to your GP first.

Risks and side effects

Polynucleotides are given by injection, so the usual effects of injections apply.

  • Redness, swelling and tenderness where the needle went in
  • Small raised bumps at the injection points for a short time
  • Bruising, particularly under the eyes
  • Rarely, infection or an allergic reaction

We explain the risks that apply to you at your consultation, along with what to do and who to contact if anything worries you afterwards.

Individual results vary. Results depend on your skin, age, lifestyle, the number of sessions and how closely you follow aftercare advice.

Questions

Polynucleotides questions

Anything else? Ask us at your free consultation, or call 020 7531 6600.

What are polynucleotides made from?

They are purified fragments of DNA, commonly derived from fish such as salmon or trout. Your practitioner will tell you which product is used and what it contains.

What is the difference between Rejuran and Plinest?

Both are polynucleotide treatments that aim to improve skin quality. They come from different manufacturers and each has its own range for different areas. We choose between them at your consultation, based on your skin and what you would like to improve.

How are polynucleotides different from fillers?

Dermal fillers add volume. Polynucleotides do not: they are used to improve the quality of the skin itself, such as hydration and elasticity, which is why they suit delicate areas like under the eyes.

How many appointments does a course involve?

Most people need a course of treatments because the improvement builds gradually. We will give you a plan at your consultation.

When will I see a difference?

This is a regenerative treatment, so change develops progressively over the course rather than straight away.

Does it hurt?

Most people find the injections manageable, and we check how you are feeling throughout.

Do polynucleotides work alongside other treatments?

Yes. They are often paired with laser treatment for under-eye pigmentation, or with Sylfirm X for texture. We will only suggest a combination if it suits your skin.

How much do polynucleotides cost?

Plinest costs £395 per syringe. Your consultation is free, and you will know the full price of your plan before you book treatment.
